UFC 216: Ferguson vs. Lee | Event Profile, Full Results & Legacy

Introduction

UFC 216: Ferguson vs. Lee. October 7, 2017. T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. Tony Ferguson submitted Kevin Lee with a triangle choke at 4:02 of round three to win the interim UFC Lightweight Championship. Demetrious Johnson broke Anderson Silva’s all-time record for consecutive UFC title defences, stopping Ray Borg with a suplex armbar in round five — possibly the greatest submission finish in the sport’s history.

The event was the first major Las Vegas sporting event following the October 1, 2017 mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival, which killed 58 people. A moment of silence was observed; first responders were brought to the Octagon and recognised. The UFC pledged one million dollars to support victims and their families.

Johnson’s record-breaking 11th consecutive title defence was scheduled as the CO-MAIN event rather than the main event — a placement that drew criticism given the historical significance of the occasion. Fabricio Werdum submitted Walt Harris in round one. Lando Vannata and Bobby Green split-drew in a FOTN-earning LW battle.

The Build-Up

The interim LW title bout originated from Khabib Nurmagomedov’s continued absence. Ferguson had been waiting for a LW title shot for years, accumulating a nine-fight winning streak. Kevin Lee had won five consecutive and was the ascending challenger. Ferguson’s interim title win would set up the fourth booking of Khabib vs. Ferguson.

Johnson’s record attempt had already been denied once at UFC 215 when Borg fell ill. The record he was chasing belonged to Anderson Silva: 10 consecutive MW title defences. Johnson had tied it in September 2017 with his win over Sergio Pettis. Wait — actually DJ tied Silva with 10 defences at UFC 201 or UFC 197. The record at the time of UFC 216 was Silva’s 10; Johnson needed a win over Borg to get his 11th and sole possession.

Main Event

Tony Ferguson vs. Kevin Lee — Interim LW Championship

Lee dominated rounds one and two, taking Ferguson down repeatedly and rocking him with ground-and-pound. At one point, Ferguson appeared badly hurt. His toughness and constant submission attempts from the bottom kept him alive.

Round three: Lee pressed forward again. Ferguson clinched and worked his way to position; Lee attempted a takedown; Ferguson dropped to guard and locked in a triangle choke. Lee tried to stack him, power out, and lift. None of it worked. Ferguson cranked from every angle until Lee tapped at 4:02. Ferguson celebrated on the canvas, screaming.

Co-Main: DJ Breaks the Record

Demetrious Johnson (c) vs. Ray Borg — FW Championship

Johnson dominated from the opening bell: inside leg kicks, takedowns, elbows, transitions. Borg had no answer for Johnson’s speed and technical precision. For four and a half rounds it appeared headed toward a record-setting unanimous decision.

Round five: Johnson picked Borg up for a German suplex. Mid-air, as Borg was coming down, Johnson transitioned to an armbar, trapping Borg’s arm on the way to the canvas. He cranked the arm while Borg’s back hit the mat. Borg tapped immediately at 3:15. Johnson had his 11th consecutive title defence. The record was his alone. Post-fight: ‘Shout out to Las Vegas. Thank you so much to all the first responders.’

Records & Milestones

Demetrious Johnson — 11th consecutive FW title defence broke Anderson Silva’s all-time record of 10. His suplex armbar is widely considered the greatest submission finish in MMA history. He would go on to make one more defence (vs. Henry Cejudo at UFC 227 in August 2018) before losing the belt.

Tony Ferguson — 10th consecutive win; interim LW champion. His record: 22-3 entering the fight. The unification with Khabib Nurmagomedov was booked again for UFC 223. Ferguson was injured walking on a set four days before the event — the fourth cancellation of their matchup.

Legacy & Impact

The suplex armbar. The moment that has been replayed thousands of times and is the defining image of Johnson’s already remarkable career. Picking up an opponent for a German suplex and deciding mid-air to transition to an armbar instead — and succeeding — is an exhibition of physical intelligence that has no equal in the sport’s history.

The event’s context added weight. The UFC’s return to Las Vegas one week after one of America’s deadliest mass shootings required the promotion to strike a tone of respect and tribute before returning to competition. The fighters delivered.

FAQ

What was so special about DJ's submission at UFC 216?

In round five, Johnson went to throw Ray Borg with a German suplex. As Borg was in the air coming down, Johnson transitioned mid-flight to an armbar, trapping Borg’s arm on the way to the mat. He locked in and cranked the arm; Borg tapped immediately at 3:15 of round five. The sequence is widely considered the greatest single submission finish in MMA history.

Was Johnson in the co-main event when he broke Silva’s record?

Yes. Despite breaking the all-time UFC record for consecutive title defences, Johnson was placed in the co-main event slot for UFC 216. Tony Ferguson’s interim LW title fight headlined. The decision drew criticism from fans and media who felt the historic occasion warranted the main event position.

How did Tony Ferguson win the interim LW title?

Kevin Lee dominated rounds one and two, taking Ferguson down repeatedly. In round three, Ferguson clinched and secured guard on the ground. He locked in a triangle choke that Lee was unable to escape despite trying to stack, lift, and power out. Lee tapped at 4:02 of round three.

Why was the event held in Las Vegas days after a mass shooting?

On October 1, 2017, a mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas killed 58 people and injured hundreds more. UFC 216 on October 7 was the first major Las Vegas sporting event since the tragedy. A moment of silence was observed; first responders were brought to the Octagon; the UFC pledged one million dollars to support victims and their families.

Who did Tony Ferguson face next for the unified LW title?

Ferguson was booked against Khabib Nurmagomedov for the LW unification at UFC 223 in April 2018. Five days before the event, Ferguson suffered a torn fibular collateral ligament while walking on a media set. The fight was cancelled for the fourth time. This remains one of MMA’s most famous unfulfilled matchups.
