The Build-Up
Cyborg had never gone the distance against any opponent in the UFC Octagon at featherweight. Holm’s boxing background, movement, and defensive IQ made her a legitimate stylistic threat — the first challenger who could theoretically out-strike and out-manoeuvre Cyborg over five rounds. The fight was billed as a genuine test of whether Cyborg’s dominance was conditional on early finishes.
Khabib’s return after 13 months away (his last fight had been UFC 205 in November 2016) was against Edson Barboza— one of the LW division’s most dangerous strikers and the #4 ranked LW. A dominant win over Barboza would make the argument for an immediate LW title shot impossible to ignore.
Main Event
Cris Cyborg (c) vs. Holly Holm — WFW Championship
Round one: Holm executed her game plan precisely. She moved well, circled away from Cyborg’s power, and landed a straight left that bloodied Cyborg’s nose. Two of three judges gave the round to Holm. Round two continued in the same pattern.
Rounds three through five: Cyborg’s physical volume came on. She landed shots in combination while Holm’s striking output diminished. Cyborg’s conditioning advantage — the thing that had always been her defining edge over five rounds — was the reason she won on the scorecards. Holm’s face showed damage. The UD preserved Cyborg’s unbeaten streak and confirmed she could win five-round title fights even when challenged.
Co-Main Event
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Edson Barboza — Lightweight
Khabib controlled the fight from the first exchange. He secured takedowns and spent over 10 minutes with Barboza on the ground, landing punches and elbows from every position. Barboza’s striking — one of the LW division’s most feared weapons — was neutralised by Khabib’s relentless wrestling. After round one Barboza rose to his knees, face battered, with the look of a man being dismantled. UD (30-24, 30-24, 30-23).

Records & Milestones
Holly Holm — first woman to take Cyborg to the scorecards in nine years. First woman to win two rounds against her in the UFC era.
Khabib Nurmagomedov — improved to 25-0. His post-fight callout of McGregor was the clearest statement yet that the UFC’s most commercially lucrative matchup was Khabib vs. McGregor.
‘Big’ John McCarthy — retired from UFC refereeing after UFC 219. His career spanned from UFC 2 in 1994 through UFC 219 in December 2017. He had refereed some of the sport’s most important fights including Royce Gracie vs. Ken Shamrock at UFC 5, the Griffin-Bonnar TUF 1 final, and the first two McGregor-Diaz fights.
Legacy & Impact
UFC 219 answered the question about Cyborg’s five-round durability. Holm’s game plan was optimal: win the early rounds with movement and precision, then survive the later rounds. She won two rounds. It still wasn’t enough. Cyborg’s physical output over five rounds proved sustainable even under pressure from the WBW’s finest kickboxer.
Khabib’s mauling of Barboza was arguably the most complete performance of 2017. Taking the sport’s most dangerous striker and preventing him from landing meaningfully across 15 minutes required a level of wrestling and cage control that only Khabib consistently demonstrated.

Who was next for Cyborg after UFC 219?
After UFC 219, Cyborg expressed interest in fighting Megan Anderson. However, her next major fight was against Amanda Nunes at UFC 232 in December 2018, where Nunes stopped her in 51 seconds to win the WFW title.
