Introduction
UFC 221: Romero vs. Rockhold. February 11, 2018. Perth Arena, Perth, Western Australia — the first UFC event in Perth and in Western Australia, after the state government overturned its ban on cage fighting. Yoel Romero defeated Luke Rockhold by TKO at 1:48 of round three with a ferocious overhand left and follow-up uppercut. Romero had missed weight at 187.7 lbs — two pounds over — meaning only Rockhold was eligible to win the interim MW title.
The event was originally planned as a GSP-Whittaker unification. GSP vacated. Whittaker pulled out with illness on January 13. Romero stepped in on one month’s notice. Despite missing weight, Dana White confirmed Romero earned a rematch with Whittaker for the undisputed title.
Israel Adesanya made his UFC debut with a TKO win over Rob Wilkinson in round two. The future UFC MW champion arrived at 12-0, defending 12 of 15 takedowns and displaying a striking clinic described by the UFC as one of the most anticipated debuts in years. Alexander Volkanovski defeated Jeremy Kennedy by UD in the prelims.

The Build-Up
UFC 221 in Perth had been planned as the GSP-Whittaker MW unification bout. GSP vacated December 7, 2017. Whittaker was then scheduled to face Rockhold for his first undisputed MW title defence. On January 13, Whittaker withdrew with a series of serious illnesses. Romero accepted the fight on approximately one month’s notice to save the Perth card’s main event.
Romero weighed in at 187.7 lbs — two pounds over the 185.9 lb championship limit. Rockhold, who made weight, was the only fighter eligible to win the interim title. Dana White stated that despite the miss, Romero’s willingness to step in on short notice as a company man would be rewarded with the Whittaker rematch.
Main Event
Yoel Romero vs. Luke Rockhold — Interim MW Championship
Round one was tactical and slow-paced. Rockhold used leg kicks to establish distance; Romero absorbed them and conserved energy. Round two: Romero charged with a flurry of punches in the opening seconds; Rockhold weathered the storm; both settled into exchanges in the centre. The round was competitive.
Round three: Romero lined up Rockhold as he was backing toward the fence and threw an overhand left that landed flush on the chin. Rockhold dropped. As he tried to regain his feet, Romero landed a brutal uppercut that sent Rockhold back to the canvas. The referee stopped it at 1:48. Post-fight, Romero claimed he had broken his leg from Rockhold’s leg kicks.
Adesanya’s UFC Debut
Israel Adesanya vs. Rob Wilkinson — Middleweight
Adesanya entered at 12-0, all wins by KO or TKO. The hype was significant. Wilkinson was a local Australian fighter who had no intention of losing in Perth. He pressured Adesanya with takedowns: 12 of 15 were defended. Adesanya was patient at distance; used varied kicks and punches to the head and body to pick Wilkinson apart.
Round two: Adesanya accumulated 52 significant strikes on Wilkinson’s face. The referee stopped the TKO at 3:37 of round two. Adesanya post-fight: ‘This isn’t my first rodeo. I’m used to this. Now people know who I am and it’s time to work.’

Records & Milestones
Israel Adesanya — UFC debut win; 13-0 professional record. He became UFC MW Champion at UFC 243 in October 2019, stopping Robert Whittaker by TKO in the second round.
Alexander Volkanovski — defeated Jeremy Kennedy at UFC 221 in what became his signature building block on the path to the UFC FW title. He challenged and beat Max Holloway at UFC 245 in December 2019.
Luke Rockhold — the Romero KO at UFC 221 ended what had been a short but dominant MW title reign and was the second time he had been finished in the division. He never fully recaptured his pre-Bisping form.
Legacy & Impact
UFC 221 is remembered for two things: the night Yoel Romero destroyed one of the MW division’s most gifted fighters with a two-punch sequence that left Rockhold unconscious on the canvas, despite being ineligible for the belt he was supposedly fighting for. And the night Israel Adesanya introduced himself to the UFC.
Adesanya’s debut in Perth was a statement. He said ‘I’m used to this’ with a composure that matched the performance. Within 18 months he was UFC MW champion. His trajectory from UFC 221 to the top of the division is one of the cleanest arcs the sport has seen.
FAQ
Why did Romero miss weight at UFC 221?
Romero took the fight on approximately one month’s notice after Robert Whittaker pulled out with illness on January 13. The short camp did not allow him sufficient time to safely complete a full weight cut. He weighed in at 187.7 lbs — two pounds over the 185.9 lb championship limit. Dana White acknowledged the miss was partly a consequence of short notice.
Who won the interim MW title at UFC 221?
Nobody. Because Romero missed weight, only Luke Rockhold was eligible to win the interim title. Romero won the fight by TKO in round three but was ineligible to receive the belt. The UFC then booked a Romero vs. Whittaker rematch for the undisputed MW title.
Was UFC 221 the first UFC event in Perth?
Yes. UFC 221 was held at Perth Arena in Perth, Western Australia — the promotion’s first event in Perth and in Western Australia. The state government had previously banned cage fighting; the ban was overturned prior to the event.
Was Israel Adesanya’s UFC debut at UFC 221 significant?
Yes. Adesanya entered the UFC at 12-0, all wins by KO or TKO. His TKO of Rob Wilkinson in round two demonstrated elite defensive wrestling (12 of 15 takedowns defended) and clinical striking. He went on to become UFC MW Champion at UFC 243 in October 2019.
What happened to Luke Rockhold after UFC 221?
Rockhold suffered a severe KO loss at UFC 221. He went on to challenge Jan Blachowicz at LHW at UFC 239 (July 2019) and was stopped in round one. He has not competed since. The Romero KO marked the end of his time as a genuine MW title contender.
