UFC 231: Holloway vs. Ortega | Event Profile, Full Results & Legacy

Updated: Jun 14

Introduction

UFC 231: Holloway vs. Ortega — December 8, 2018, Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, Ontario. Max Holloway defended the UFC Featherweight Championship against Brian Ortega in one of the division’s most dramatic title fights — a contest that saw Ortega absorb enormous punishment across four rounds, hurt Holloway briefly with his dangerous submission game, and ultimately be stopped by TKO (doctor stoppage) at 5:00 of round four when the cageside physician would not let him come out for round five. It was Holloway’s second consecutive Featherweight title defence and a statement performance that reaffirmed his position as one of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the sport. Ortega had arrived undefeated at 14-0, with finishes of Frankie Edgar, Cub Swanson, and others on his record, making the Toronto crowd genuinely uncertain about the outcome until the final stoppage.

Valentina Shevchenko won the vacant UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship in the co-main, defeating former strawweight champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk by unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46). Thiago Santos delivered the night’s most explosive finish on the main card with a second-round KO of Jimi Manuwa. For the preceding event see UFC 230.

The Build-Up

Holloway had built the most impressive FW title run since Jose Aldo, defending the title he won at UFC 212 and successfully defending twice since, most recently at UFC 218. Ortega had been unstoppable on his way to the title shot, finishing six consecutive UFC opponents. His submission game — particularly his guillotine choke — was considered the biggest threat Holloway had faced as champion. The Toronto card also carried historic weight with Shevchenko’s inaugural Women’s FW Championship bout in the co-main.

Main Event — Holloway vs. Ortega

Max Holloway (c) vs. Brian Ortega — UFC Featherweight Championship

Holloway’s volume and pressure were relentless from the opening round. He landed in triplets and quadruplets, mixing levels and using his jab-kick combinations to keep Ortega on the back foot. Ortega, as advertised, was extraordinarily dangerous — he secured a guillotine attempt that forced Holloway to fight his way out with composure, and hurt the champion with his right hand on multiple occasions. By round three the fight had taken on a brutal rhythm: Holloway landing, Ortega absorbing and countering, neither man going away. Round four was a Holloway clinic — he landed at will, opened up Ortega’s face, and finished the round with the challenger badly cut and swollen. The Toronto ringside physician examined Ortega between rounds, decided he could not safely continue, and the fight was waved off at 5:00 of round four. Holloway set a UFC record for significant strikes landed in the bout. One of the best fights of 2018 in any weight class and one of the finest performances of Holloway’s championship era.

Co-Main Event — Shevchenko vs. Jędrzejczyk

Valentina Shevchenko vs. Joanna Jędrzejczyk — Vacant UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship

After Nicco Montano was stripped of the Women’s Flyweight title earlier in the year due to weight-cut complications at UFC 228, the UFC matched Shevchenko with former strawweight champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk for the vacant belt. Shevchenko’s clinch work, takedowns, and Muay Thai answers to Jędrzejczyk’s volume striking gave her clean control of three rounds; Jędrzejczyk closed the fight stronger but the deficit was too large to overcome. The three judges all scored it 49-46 for Shevchenko. It was the start of a title reign that became one of the most dominant in women’s MMA history. Also on the main card, Thiago Santos KO’d Jimi Manuwa in round two and Gunnar Nelson submitted Alex Oliveira by rear-naked choke in round two.
