Introduction
UFC Fight Night 229: Dawson vs. Green took place on October 7, 2023 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas — UFC Vegas 80. The lightweight main event featured No. 10-ranked Grant Dawson, who had not lost since April 2016, against unranked veteran Bobby Green. It was supposed to be Dawson’s coronation as a legitimate contender. Instead, Green produced one of the most shocking finishes of 2023.
Green knocked Dawson out cold with his first left hand just 33 seconds into round one — the biggest win of his career. The undercard featured Joe Pyfer’s continued rise and Drew Dober passing Dustin Poirier to set the UFC lightweight knockout record. Four PoN bonuses were awarded with no Fight of the Night.

It was the biggest upset on a Fight Night card in 2023. Dawson had not lost since April 2016 and was riding an 8-0-1 UFC streak. Green’s precision and composure turned what was supposed to be a coronation into a career-defining moment for the veteran.
