Ronda Rousey: Rowdy — Fighter Profile, Career & Legacy

Introduction

Ronda "Rowdy" Rousey is the woman who built women's MMA. Olympic judo bronze medalist, first UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion, first female UFC Hall of Famer — and now, as of May 2026, the headliner of Netflix's first-ever MMA event in a stunning return against Gina Carano after nearly a decade away. Whatever happens at the Intuit Dome on May 16, the division she opened up has already outlived the violence that closed her first run.

Background

Born February 1, 1987 in Riverside, California to AnnMaria De Mars — herself a 1984 World Judo Champion. Rousey suffered from childhood apraxia and could not speak intelligibly until age six. She started judo at eleven, dropped out of high school to train full-time, and became the first American woman to medal in judo at the Olympics with a bronze in Beijing in 2008.

She transitioned to MMA in 2010 with King of the Cage, then moved to Strikeforce in 2011. By 2012 she was Strikeforce Bantamweight Champion. The UFC, which had no women's division at the time, signed her in late 2012 — and built a 135-pound division around her.

Fighting Style

Olympic-grade judo, full stop. Rousey's game was built on closing distance with a feinted right hand, securing a clinch, and using gripping, throws, and trips to put opponents on the floor. Her armbar setup from any control position was so refined that it became almost unstoppable in 35-pound finishes from 2013 to 2015.

Her boxing emerged later in her career under coach Edmond Tarverdyan, and that evolution is widely viewed as the beginning of the end. Tarverdyan moved her away from the judo and clinch-led game that made her unbeatable; the Holly Holm loss exposed the gap, and the Nunes loss confirmed it. Defensive striking and head movement remained her one true vulnerability.

Career Highlights

August 2008 — Bronze medal in judo at the Beijing Olympics.

March 2012 — Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Champion (defeated Miesha Tate by armbar).

February 2013 — Inaugural UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion at UFC 157, beating Liz Carmouche by first-round armbar in the first women's fight in UFC history.

February 2015 — UFC 184 vs Cat Zingano. Won by armbar in 14 seconds, the fastest title fight finish in UFC women's history.

July 2018 — First female fighter inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

April 2018 — WrestleMania 34 debut for WWE; later headlined the first women's WrestleMania main event in 2019.

Notable Fights & Rivalries

vs Liz Carmouche (UFC 157, 2013)

The first women's fight in UFC history. Carmouche took Rousey's back early and threatened a neck crank, but Rousey escaped, secured an armbar, and finished in the first round. The bout proved women could headline major UFC pay-per-views.

vs Miesha Tate (Strikeforce 2012, UFC 168 2013)

Tate's vocal hatred of Rousey provided the storyline that sold women's MMA to a mainstream audience. Rousey won both fights by armbar, the second one breaking Tate's elbow in front of a captive cable audience.

vs Holly Holm (UFC 193, 2015)

The most shocking upset in MMA history. Holm out-boxed Rousey for two minutes of round one, then knocked her out cold with a left head kick in round two. Rousey was hospitalized and never the same fighter afterward.

vs Amanda Nunes (UFC 207, 2016)

Rousey's return after the Holm loss lasted 48 seconds. Nunes connected with a flurry of straight rights and the referee waved it off. Rousey did not fight in MMA again until the 2026 Carano bout.

Championships & Accolades

UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion (2013-2015) — six successful title defenses.

Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Champion (2012) — final holder of the title.

First female fighter signed by the UFC.

UFC Hall of Fame (2018, first female inductee).

Olympic bronze medal in judo (Beijing 2008).

WWE Raw Women's Champion and two-time SmackDown Women's Champion; eighth Women's Triple Crown Champion in WWE history.

Current Status

Active. Rousey returns to MMA on May 16, 2026 at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California against fellow trailblazer Gina Carano. The fight headlines Netflix's first MMA event, promoted by Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) — Jake Paul's banner. It is her first MMA fight since December 2016 and Carano's first since 2009.

She has publicly stated this is her final MMA fight unless the Carano bout demands a trilogy. In a March 2026 surprise appearance at AEW Revolution, she confronted Toni Storm in a cameo that signaled she is not fully done with combat-sports media, but does not intend to return to a wrestling schedule. She has expressed a desire to have more children and to write more graphic novels — her first, Expecting the Unexpected, was published in October 2025.

Fun Facts

Her mother AnnMaria De Mars was the 1984 World Judo Champion and remains the highest judo authority in her training corner.

She voiced Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat 11 (2019).

Acting credits include The Expendables 3, Furious 7, and the network drama 9-1-1.

Has 16.93 million Instagram followers and remains one of the most search-traffic-driving figures in combat sports history.

Married fellow UFC fighter Travis Browne in 2017; their daughter La'akea Makalapua-O-Kamakao'i was born in September 2021.

Her graphic novel Expecting the Unexpected was published by AWA Studios in October 2025 with art by Mike Deodato.

Has been openly critical of UFC ownership and the promotion's treatment of female fighters since her departure.

Legacy / Verdict

Without Rousey, the UFC women's division does not exist. Dana White publicly said women would never fight in the UFC; Rousey forced him to reverse course. Every woman who has held a UFC belt — Holm, Tate, Nunes, Shevchenko, Zhang, Pereira — fought through a door she kicked open.

The losses to Holm and Nunes hurt her record but not her place in the sport. She built the platform; she earned over $20 million in prize money during a four-year championship run; she crossed over to WWE and Hollywood at a level no other female combat sports athlete has matched. Whatever happens against Carano in May 2026 is bonus material on a Hall of Fame ledger.
