The Build-Up
Dominick Cruz, the undisputed UFC BW Champion, had been sidelined by injury. Barao and Faber were the two best bantamweights in the UFC’s active roster. Barao had won three straight in the UFC without defeat. Faber had won two straight after losing to Cruz. The interim title would determine who held the belt while Cruz recovered.
Main Event
Renan Barão vs. Urijah Faber — UFC Interim BW Championship
Barão used his reach advantage and leg kicks to control range throughout five rounds. Faber could not pin Barão against the fence or secure takedowns that led to submissions. The Brazilian’s footwork prevented Faber from establishing his preferred close-range boxing. Barão’s output was higher across all five rounds and the scorecards reflected it clearly.
It was the first title fight of Barão’s career. He had not lost since his professional debut in 2005. He was 25 years old. After the win, he called for the unification fight with Dominick Cruz.
Co-Main Event
Tim Boetsch vs. Hector Lombard — Middleweight
Lombard was one of the most anticipated UFC signings of 2012 — a 34-fight winning streak outside the UFC and a reputation as one of the sport’s most dangerous strikers. He lost to Boetsch by split decision, which was widely regarded as a disappointing UFC debut. The result was 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 for Boetsch.

Legacy & Impact
Renan Barão at UFC 149 established himself as the most complete BW on the planet. His unbeaten streak, the quality of his opponents across it, and the manner of the Faber win — clear, technical, five rounds — demonstrated an elite-level consistency that the division had not seen outside of Dominick Cruz. The unification fight with Cruz was the fight everyone wanted.
Hector Lombard’s debut disappointment was one of the sport’s most anticipated misfires of 2012. A fighter who had gone 34 fights without a loss in non-UFC competition, signed after years of hype, lost his UFC debut by split decision to Tim Boetsch.'),
