The Build-Up

Mexico City had been a target for the UFC for years because of Cain Velasquez’s Mexican-American fanbase and his enormous following south of the border. Velasquez was scheduled to fight Werdum in the event’s main event with the HW title on the line. Three weeks before the event, Velasquez’s knee gave out in training — a partially torn MCL and meniscus. Hunt, who had recently fought and was nearly 50 lbs above the 265 lb limit, accepted the short-notice slot. He flew to Mexico City and spent two weeks cutting weight at high altitude.'),

Main Event

Fabricio Werdum vs. Mark Hunt — UFC Interim HW Championship

Hunt landed a straight right in round one that dropped Werdum. Werdum recovered. Hunt dropped him again with another punch. Werdum survived and managed to get up. The round ended with Werdum still standing. In round two, Hunt swung for a big punch and missed. Werdum stepped in and launched a flying knee that connected flush on Hunt’s chin. Hunt went down. Werdum followed with ground strikes. Referee Herb Dean stopped it at 2:27. Werdum immediately addressed the Mexican crowd in Spanish, led them in a song, and celebrated in a way that made him the adopted champion of the night.'),

Co-Main Event

Kelvin Gastelum vs. Jake Ellenberger — Welterweight

Gastelum and Ellenberger exchanged strikes early. Gastelum landed a takedown. In the clinch with seconds remaining in round one, Gastelum locked in a rear-naked choke. Ellenberger tapped at 4:46. It was Gastelum’s biggest UFC win to that point — a submission of a former top-five WW contender in his adopted home country.'),

Legacy & Impact

UFC 180 was the UFC’s formal introduction to the Mexican market. The crowd of 21,000 that sold out in 8 hours, despite the event’s main event losing the fighter it had been built around, demonstrated the depth of interest in the sport in Mexico. Cain Velasquez watching from the crowd while Werdum won the belt he should have been defending gave the event a narrative that no promotion could have written in advance.'),

Werdum’s post-fight celebration — speaking Spanish, singing with the crowd, and thanking Mexico City for hosting him — is one of the sport’s most discussed champion moments that had nothing to do with the fight itself. He had been adopted by the crowd before the first round ended.'),

FAQ

Why was UFC 180 the first UFC event in Mexico?

Mexico City had been targeted for years due to Cain Velasquez’s enormous following among Mexican-American and Mexican fans. UFC 180 at Arena Ciudad de México on November 15, 2014 was the first UFC event held on Mexican soil.

Why wasn't Cain Velasquez in the main event at UFC 180?

Velasquez withdrew on October 21, 2014, with a torn MCL and meniscus in his right knee during training. He was replaced by Mark Hunt, who accepted the fight with two weeks’ notice.

How did Werdum win after being dropped twice in round one?

Hunt dropped Werdum twice in round one, but Werdum survived to the end of the round. In round two, Werdum baited Hunt into throwing a punch, stepped inside, and landed a flying knee. He followed with ground-and-pound to stop the fight at 2:27.

Why did the UFC fight at 7,400 feet altitude in Mexico City?

Arena Ciudad de México sits approximately 7,400 feet above sea level — higher than Denver and significantly higher than most UFC venues. The altitude affects cardiovascular output, which is why Hunt having to cut 50 lbs at altitude in two weeks was considered an extreme challenge.

Who was Yair Rodriguez at UFC 180?

Rodriguez won the TUF Latin America FW Tournament Final against Leonardo Morales at UFC 180, making it his effective UFC debut. He became a top UFC FW contender by 2018 and is known for one of the most dramatic late stoppages in UFC history against Korean Zombie at UFC Fight Night 139.
