The Build-Up

Lawler had entered UFC 201 as the second-longest-tenured UFC champion behind only Demetrious Johnson. His title reign included back-to-back FOTY performances against Rory MacDonald (UFC 189) and Carlos Condit (UFC 195). The WW division had never seen a champion so completely defined by his own toughness.

Woodley had waited years for a title shot after a string of frustrating near-misses and controversy. A two-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler from Missouri, his explosiveness and heavy right hand were considered his best tools against Lawler’s pressure game. Most analysts gave Lawler a significant edge in experience and championship composure.

Main Event

Robbie Lawler (c) vs. Tyron Woodley — UFC WW Championship

Both fighters were patient in the opening minute. Lawler circled; Woodley measured. As Lawler moved forward, Woodley cut off the cage and threw an overhand right that landed flush. Lawler dropped. Woodley added follow-up punches and the referee stopped the fight at 2:12.

Tyron Woodley was the UFC WW Champion. Post-fight: ‘I want the biggest money fights. GSP, Nick Diaz — the money fights.’

Co-Main Event

Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs. Rose Namajunas — Women’s Strawweight

Namajunas showcased movement and crisp striking in round one, landing punches and kicks from the outside. Kowalkiewicz struggled to find range in the opening five minutes but swung momentum in round two through clinch work, knees, and elbows. Round three was close; Kowalkiewicz’s clinch control proved the difference on two of three scorecards. Namajunas’s loss positioned her for a title eliminator run; Kowalkiewicz remained unbeaten.

Records & Milestones

Tyron Woodley — ended Robbie Lawler’s 22-month WW reign with a single overhand right. Went on to make four title defences before losing the belt to Kamaru Usman at UFC 235 in March 2019.

Robbie Lawler — his loss ended a stretch of consecutive WW title fights (vs. Hendricks 1 and 2, MacDonald, Condit, Woodley) that produced some of the greatest WW title bouts in the division’s history.

Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs. Rose Namajunas — their rematch at UFC 218 (December 2017) ended with Namajunas winning by TKO in R1 following her WSW title win over Joanna Jędrzejczyk at UFC 217.

Legacy & Impact

UFC 201 ended the Lawler era. Woodley’s KO win in 2:12 was the most efficient possible answer to a champion whose identity was built entirely on never being KO’d and always being the toughest man in the room. One overhand right dismantled that identity completely.

The Woodley era began with controversy almost immediately: his four title defences (vs. Thompson x2, Maia, Covington) produced a long string of low-action main events that drew criticism from fans and media. The WW division’s exciting Lawler years were replaced by a more calculated, defensive champion.
