UFC 209: Woodley vs. Thompson 2 | Event Profile, Full Results & Legacy

Introduction

UFC 209: Woodley vs. Thompson 2. March 4, 2017. T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. Tyron Woodley retained the UFC Welterweight Championship against Stephen Thompson by majority decision (48-47, 47-47, 48-47) in the rematch of their UFC 205 draw. The fight was widely criticised as one of the most cautious WW title fights in years.

The event’s most significant story played out the day before the fight: Khabib Nurmagomedov was hospitalised with weight management medical issues on Thursday evening, cancelling his interim LW Championship bout against Tony Ferguson. It was the third time their fight had been booked and cancelled. Ferguson had made weight at 154.5 lbs; Khabib never stepped on the scale.

Alistair Overeem stopped Mark Hunt with an elbow and knee combination in round three. Rashad Evans lost his MW debut to Daniel Kelly by SD. Cynthia Calvillo made her UFC debut with a first-round submission win.

The Build-Up

The UFC 205 draw had generated immediate demand for a rematch. Both Woodley and Thompson expressed belief that they had won their first fight. Woodley had controlled the first round with wrestling; Thompson had won rounds two and three at range; round four nearly ended it for Thompson. The rematch was set with the expectation that familiarity would produce more action. It did not.

The co-main event had been equally anticipated: Khabib vs. Ferguson for the interim LW title. This was the third time the UFC had attempted to make the fight. Their first booking (TUF Finale, 2015) was cancelled when Ferguson had a lung issue. Their second booking (UFC on Fox: Teixeira vs. Evans) was cancelled when Khabib was injured. Now, at UFC 209, it was cancelled again.

Main Event

Tyron Woodley (c) vs. Stephen Thompson — UFC WW Championship

Both fighters were overcautious from the opening exchanges. Thompson respected Woodley’s power after the UFC 205 fourth round; Woodley retreated from Thompson’s range. The result was a fight with extended periods of inactivity. The main card broadcast showed multiple replays simply because there was insufficient live action to fill the airtime.

When they did engage, Thompson landed crisp kicks and Woodley countered with right hands. Woodley’s grappling control in round one and a clean right hand in round five gave him the edge on two scorecards. One judge again drew it. Woodley retained via MD: 48-47, 47-47, 48-47.

Khabib-Ferguson Cancellation

On Thursday March 2 — two days before UFC 209 — Khabib Nurmagomedov was transported to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas due to weight management medical issues related to his weight cut. He was discharged but doctors recommended he not compete.

Tony Ferguson had made weight at 154.5 lbs. Khabib never stepped on the scale. At the end of the official weigh-in, the UFC announced the interim LW Championship bout was cancelled. It was the third time the two had been booked together and the third time the fight had not happened.

The fourth booking: Khabib vs. Ferguson was scheduled again for UFC 223 on April 7, 2018. Ferguson tore his fibular collateral ligament on April 1, 2018, walking on the set of a media obligation — weeks before the event. The fight was cancelled for the fourth time. Khabib eventually fought Al Iaquinta at UFC 223 as a late replacement for the LW title.

Records & Milestones

Tyron Woodley — second successful WW title defence. The Woodley-Thompson trilogy never materialised; Woodley’s next challenge was Demian Maia at UFC 214 (July 2017) and then Darren Till (UFC 228) before losing the belt to Kamaru Usman at UFC 235.

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson — third cancelled booking. The fight was rebooked three more times (UFC 223 April 2018: Ferguson injured; UFC 249 April 2020: COVID cancelled; UFC 249 as originally planned but no Khabib). The fight never happened and is widely regarded as the greatest ‘what if’ matchup in MMA history.

Alistair Overeem def. Mark Hunt — this was their first official meeting where the result counted (their UFC 200 fight had been overturned to NC due to Lesnar’s drug test failure and Hunt’s subsequent related findings).

Legacy & Impact

UFC 209 is remembered primarily for what didn’t happen. The Khabib-Ferguson cancellation began a streak that became one of MMA’s most extraordinary running narratives. By the time the bookings reached a fifth and sixth iteration (both cancelled or falling through due to different circumstances), the fight had taken on near-mythological status as the bout the universe itself seemed determined to prevent.

The Woodley-Thompson rematch — the main event — was the antithesis of the first fight’s tension. Both fighters’ tactical caution, born from fear of the other’s weapons, produced a contest most analysts ranked among the worst main events in WW title history.

FAQ

Why was Khabib vs. Ferguson cancelled at UFC 209?

Khabib Nurmagomedov was hospitalised on Thursday March 2 with weight management medical issues related to his weight cut. Doctors recommended he not compete. His opponent Tony Ferguson had made weight at 154.5 lbs. At the end of the official weigh-in, the UFC announced the interim LW Championship bout was cancelled. It was the third time the two had been scheduled against each other.

How many times has Khabib vs. Ferguson been booked?

The fight was booked and cancelled at least four times as of mid-2018: (1) TUF Finale 2015 — Ferguson withdrew with a lung issue; (2) UFC on Fox: Teixeira vs. Evans — Khabib withdrew with injury; (3) UFC 209 March 2017 — Khabib hospitalised during weight cut; (4) UFC 223 April 2018 — Ferguson tore his fibular collateral ligament walking on a media set one week before the fight.

Was Woodley vs. Thompson 2 worse than their first fight?

Most analysts agreed the rematch was significantly worse than their UFC 205 draw. Both fighters’ familiarity with each other’s danger created extreme caution. Woodley backed away from Thompson’s range; Thompson refused to enter Woodley’s power zone. Long stretches of inactivity defined the fight. One judge again drew it 47-47.

Was there a third Woodley vs. Thompson fight?

No. After the UFC 209 rematch, Woodley moved on to defend against Demian Maia (UFC 214), then Darren Till (UFC 228). Thompson eventually challenged Woodley a third time — but that fight never materialised before Woodley lost the belt to Kamaru Usman at UFC 235 in March 2019.

Was the Overeem vs. Hunt fight at UFC 209 their first official result?

Yes. Overeem and Hunt had previously fought at UFC 200 in July 2016, with Overeem winning by unanimous decision. However, that result was overturned to a No Contest after Overeem failed USADA drug tests for clomiphene. Their UFC 209 fight was the first time the bout’s result stood on the official record.
