The Build-Up

Miocic had won the HW title at UFC 198 by knocking out Fabricio Werdum in Brazil, then made his first defence by stopping Alistair Overeem at UFC 203 in his hometown Cleveland. Dos Santos had beaten Miocic in their December 2014 meeting by a close UD and had rebounded from recent losses with dominant performances.

The fight offered a clear rematch narrative: Dos Santos’s boxing vs. Miocic’s wrestling and improved punching power. Dos Santos remained one of the most technically gifted boxers in the HW division. Miocic’s defensive wrestling was the question.

Main Event

Stipe Miocic (c) vs. Junior dos Santos — HW Championship

Miocic stalked dos Santos from the opening bell, cutting off the cage. Dos Santos landed a right hand early, but Miocic came forward relentlessly. He pressured dos Santos against the fence and threw a right hand that landed on the jaw. Dos Santos was staggered; Miocic followed with combinations. Dos Santos went down. Herb Dean stopped it at 2:22 of round one.

Stipe Miocic had avenged his December 2014 loss and made his second consecutive HW title defence, tying the UFC record for most consecutive HW title defences.

Co-Main Event

Joanna Jędrzejczyk (c) vs. Jéssica Andrade — WSW Championship

Andrade’s size and power posed a different challenge to Jędrzejczyk’s striking range. Andrade took the champion down in round one and may have won the first frame. From round two, Jędrzejczyk’s volume striking took over. She landed three strikes for every one Andrade threw across the middle rounds. UD win for the champion; fifth consecutive title defence.

Records & Milestones

Stipe Miocic — second consecutive HW title defence; tied the UFC HW record for most consecutive defences. He went on to make a third defence at UFC 220 against Francis Ngannou.

Joanna Jędrzejczyk — fifth consecutive WSW title defence, placing her in elite company as one of the most dominant WSW champions in the division’s history.

Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier — NO CONTEST at UFC 211. Their official rematch took place at UFC 211... wait, the rematch was later at UFC 218. The UFC 211 NC result meant neither fight counted on their records.

Paulo Costa (Borrachinha) — UFC debut TKO win at UFC 211 was the start of a 13-0 professional MMA record before his first career loss to Israel Adesanya at UFC 253 in September 2020 for the UFC MW title.

Legacy & Impact

UFC 211’s main event was Miocic’s most efficient possible answer to a rematch narrative: the man who beat him with elite boxing was stopped in 2:22 of the first round when Miocic’s wrestling-based pressure game didn’t give dos Santos room to set his feet and box.

The Alvarez-Poirier no-contest is one of the more frustrating results in LW division history. Both fighters were clearly interested in fighting each other; the illegal knee robbed fans of a definitive result. Their rematch at UFC 218 in December 2017 ended in a controversial TKO finish.

FAQ

How did Miocic beat dos Santos at UFC 211?

Miocic applied heavy pressure from the opening bell, cutting off the cage and not allowing dos Santos to set his feet. He landed a right hand to the jaw that staggered dos Santos, followed with combinations, and finished with ground-and-pound before Herb Dean stopped it at 2:22 of round one.

Was the Alvarez vs. Poirier fight at UFC 211 the first time they met?

Yes, and it ended in a no-contest. Alvarez threw illegal knees during the fight and was penalised, with the bout declared a no-contest. Their official UFC rematch took place at UFC 218 in December 2017, where Poirier stopped Alvarez by TKO in round one in a controversial finish.

Who made their UFC debut at UFC 211?

Paulo Costa (nicknamed Borrachinha) made his UFC debut at UFC 211, stopping Oluwale Bamgbose by TKO in round two. Costa went undefeated in MMA for years before suffering his first career loss to Israel Adesanya in a UFC MW title fight at UFC 253 in September 2020.

What was the significance of Maia vs. Masvidal at UFC 211?

Demian Maia defeated Jorge Masvidal by split decision in a WW bout, with Maia’s wrestling and grappling dominant throughout. The win earned Maia the next WW title shot, which he used to challenge Tyron Woodley at UFC 214 in July 2017.

What was Joanna’s record in WSW title defences after UFC 211?

Jedrzejczyk made her fifth consecutive WSW title defence at UFC 211 with a UD win over Andrade. She went on to defend the title a sixth time at UFC 217 in November 2017 against Rose Namajunas, where she lost by TKO in round one.
