Introduction
UFC 221: Romero vs. Rockhold. February 10, 2018 (North American date). Perth Arena, Perth, Western Australia — the first UFC event in Perth, after the state government overturned its cage fighting ban. Yoel Romero knocked out Luke Rockhold with a left hook and follow-up uppercut in round three. The bout was designated for the interim MW Championship, but only Rockhold could claim the title: Romero missed weight at 187.2 lbs, 2.2 lbs over the 185 lb limit.
The main event underwent multiple changes. Robert Whittaker was the undisputed MW champion (elevated when GSP vacated in December 2017) but withdrew on January 13 with a hernia requiring emergency surgery. Rockhold was already booked as the challenger. Romero replaced Whittaker on short notice.
Curtis Blaydes dominated Mark Hunt by UD in the co-main. Israel Adesanya stopped Rob Wilkinson by TKO to win his Performance of the Night bonus in what became one of the most significant debuts in UFC history. Alexander Volkanovski defeated Jeremy Kennedy — the start of the rise of a future UFC FW champion.

The Build-Up & Weight Miss
The MW title had been unstable for months. Georges St-Pierre had won the title at UFC 217 on November 4, 2017 and vacated it 11 days later (Crohn’s disease). Robert Whittaker was elevated to undisputed champion. His first scheduled defence was against Romero at UFC 221. When Whittaker withdrew on January 13 with a hernia requiring emergency surgery, Rockhold— already booked as challenger — remained. Romero was brought in as replacement on short notice.
On fight week, Romero came in at 187.2 lbs at the official weigh-in — 2.2 lbs over the 185 lb MW championship limit. The interim title bout was reduced to a non-title MW fight for Romero’s purposes: only Rockhold could win the interim championship. Rockhold’s camp decided to proceed with the fight rather than withdraw. It was a decision that cost him dearly.
Main Event
Yoel Romero vs. Luke Rockhold — Interim MW Championship (Romero ineligible; missed weight)
Romero stood in front of Rockhold with his characteristic patient stance, inviting attacks. Rockhold used his length and low kicks in rounds one and two, keeping the Cuban at a distance and winning on activity. Romero’s pace was deliberately slow; he conserved energy through the early rounds.
Round three: Rockhold was keeping his distance with jabs and kicks. Romero tracked him to the cage. As Rockhold backed up, Romero launched a devastating left hook that landed on the chin. Rockhold crumpled. As he tried to rise, Romero landed a follow-up uppercut. Rockhold was out. The stoppage came without further follow-up needed. The finish was one of the most violent of Romero’s already highlight-filled career.
Romero had won — but there was no title. His weight miss had ensured that. Rockhold had accepted the fight knowing Romero could not win the belt; the gamble of proceeding resulted in a KO loss.
Co-Main Event
Curtis Blaydes vs. Mark Hunt — Heavyweight
Blaydes controlled Hunt completely with his wrestling, landing repeated takedowns and spending most of the fight in dominant position. Hunt— at 43 years old — was unable to keep the fight standing. UD (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) for Blaydes.

Alexander Volkanovski — UFC debut UD win at UFC 221. He went on to win the UFC FW Championship at UFC 245 in December 2019 by defeating Max Holloway, becoming the longest-reigning active FW champion.
Tai Tuivasa — UFC debut TKO win in Perth, his home state. Became known as an exciting local Australian HW fighter before later finishing a run of four consecutive KO wins (2022) and becoming a top HW contender.
Luke Rockhold — KO loss at UFC 221 was his second consecutive title fight loss (Bisping at UFC 199, Romero at UFC 221). He fought only twice more after UFC 221 before taking an extended hiatus.
Legacy & Impact
UFC 221 is the event where the future arrived. Israel Adesanya’s UFC debut and Alexander Volkanovski’s debut both happened here, in Perth, Australia, in February 2018. Within two years, both were UFC champions. The card was stacked with Australian local talent — Hunt, Tuivasa, Volkanovski, Pedro, Adesanya (New Zealander fighting in Australia) — and it served as a statement about the sport’s Pacific reach.
The weight miss was the card’s shadow. Romero knocked out Rockhold with one of the most violent punches of the year and received no title for it. Rockhold’s decision to accept the fight anyway will be second-guessed forever.
FAQ
Why was the UFC 221 main event not officially a title fight for Romero?
Romero weighed in at 187.2 lbs, 2.2 lbs over the 185 lb middleweight limit. As a result, the interim MW Championship was only available to Luke Rockhold. Romero could not win the title regardless of the outcome. Rockhold chose to proceed with the fight knowing this.
How did Romero KO Rockhold?
In round three, Rockhold was keeping distance with jabs and low kicks. Romero tracked him to the cage and launched a devastating left hook that dropped Rockhold. As Rockhold tried to rise, Romero landed a follow-up uppercut that finished the fight. It was one of the most violent knockouts of Romero’s career.
Why was UFC 221 in Perth at 11am local time?
Perth, Western Australia is UTC+8, which is significantly ahead of North American time zones. For the event to broadcast live during prime time on the US East Coast (approximately 10pm ET), the local Perth time was 11am the following morning. The early local time drew some criticism but the event sold out the Perth Arena.
Was Israel Adesanya’s debut at UFC 221?
Yes. Israel Adesanya made his UFC debut at UFC 221 in Perth, stopping Rob Wilkinson by TKO in round two. He won a Performance of the Night bonus for the finish. He went on to become the undisputed UFC Middleweight Champion at UFC 243 in October 2019 in Melbourne.
Why did Robert Whittaker miss UFC 221?
Whittaker was scheduled to fight Romero for the unified MW title at UFC 221 but withdrew on January 13, 2018 after suffering a hernia that required emergency surgery. He was recovering from the surgery and unable to compete. Rockhold remained as challenger; Romero stepped in as the replacement opponent.
