UFC 236: Holloway vs. Poirier 2 | Event Profile, Full Results & Legacy

Updated: Jun 14

Introduction

UFC 236: Holloway vs. Poirier 2 — April 13, 2019, State Farm Arena, Atlanta, Georgia. A card carrying two interim title fights, both of which delivered five-round wars that were instantly placed among the finest title fights of the decade. Khabib Nurmagomedov was serving his nine-month suspension following the post-fight brawl at UFC 229, creating a vacancy that Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier were asked to fill. Robert Whittaker was still recovering from his emergency surgery, his title still technically active but his activity frozen, creating an identical situation for Israel Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum at middleweight. Both interim fights went the distance. Both were spectacular.

Poirier’s UD win over Holloway in the main event and Adesanya’s UD win over Gastelum in the co-main ensured that Atlanta witnessed the sport’s two most anticipated fights of 2019’s first half. See the full 2019 context in our UFC 235 profile.

The Build-Up

Khabib’s suspension after UFC 229 left the LW title vacant for competitive purposes. Holloway and Poirier had fought once before at UFC 143 in February 2012, when Poirier submitted Holloway via mounted triangle armbar at 3:23 of round one. In the seven years since, both had ascended enormously: Holloway won the FW title at UFC 212 in 2017 and defended it twice, most recently at UFC 231 vs. Ortega; Poirier, meanwhile, had gone on a tear at lightweight — beating Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez — with his lone divisional loss a 2016 knockout to Michael Johnson. Both were genuine top-five fighters in the world. The MW situation was equally intriguing: Whittaker’s surgical recovery had stalled his title activity, and Adesanya’s win over Anderson Silva at UFC 234 had made him the inevitable interim title contender. Gastelum had beaten a series of top middleweights to earn his shot.

Main Event — Holloway vs. Poirier 2

Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier — Interim UFC Lightweight Championship

One of the greatest fights at 155 lbs in UFC history. Both men arrived as among the sport’s most complete fighters at their respective natural weights, and the extra size of LW gave both room to push the pace and absorb damage without faltering. Poirier rocked Holloway badly in the first round with a straight left hand and kept landing the cleaner, heavier power shots through the early rounds — though Holloway, famous for his durability, never went down. Holloway answered with his trademark volume, pushing back hard in the middle rounds, and the two traded as Poirier began to look winded. But Poirier had built too big a cushion. Rounds four and five saw both men at their absolute ceiling, with Holloway pressing forward and Poirier holding his own. The unanimous decision (49-46 across all three judges) went to Poirier, making him the new interim UFC Lightweight Champion and the No. 1 contender for Khabib Nurmagomedov’s undisputed title. The result snapped Holloway’s 13-fight UFC win streak and was his first defeat since a 2013 decision loss to Conor McGregor; Poirier capped off years of contender-tier work with his first UFC title.

Co-Main Event — Adesanya vs. Gastelum

Israel Adesanya vs. Kelvin Gastelum — Interim UFC Middleweight Championship

Widely considered one of the finest middleweight fights in UFC history and one of the greatest title fights in any weight class. Gastelum brought ferocious pressure and a powerful left hand that landed clean throughout the contest, troubling Adesanya in a way few opponents ever had. The southpaw took the opening round, knocking Adesanya into the cage with a hard left for a first-round knockdown, and later badly hurt him with a head kick in the fourth that briefly sent Adesanya into survival mode. Each time, Adesanya recovered, reset, and answered with the composure and precision that defined his style.

Round five was operatic. Adesanya dropped Gastelum three times late in the round — the most knockdowns ever landed in the fifth round of a UFC title fight — and claimed a 10-8 final round on all three scorecards. The unanimous decision, 48-46, 48-46, 48-46, went his way. Both fighters earned Fight of the Night honors. A visibly emotional Adesanya told the crowd he was ‘ready for war,’ adding that he never thought about the scorecards because, as he put it, ‘all I need is one round.’ It was one of the most compelling performances in middleweight history and the moment his global fanbase was cemented.

Records & Milestones

Adesanya became the interim UFC Middleweight Champion and set up the unification fight with Robert Whittaker. Poirier became the interim UFC Lightweight Champion and the next challenger for Khabib Nurmagomedov, whom he would face for unification at UFC 242. Gastelum’s performance was widely recognised as the finest of his career. Holloway, despite the loss, returned to defend his FW title at UFC 240 against Frankie Edgar and was unaffected long-term by the LW campaign. The card’s total output — two five-round wars decided by the judges, both involving fighters performing at their ceiling — made UFC 236 one of 2019’s most celebrated events.

Legacy & Impact

UFC 236 is remembered as a double-header of extraordinary quality, and specifically as the night Adesanya vs. Gastelum announced that the middleweight division had found its next era. The fight is cited by many as one of the five best MW title fights in the promotion’s history, and Gastelum’s performance remains his career peak. Adesanya’s emotional post-fight interview — after a fight in which he had absorbed the best Gastelum could bring and still won — was the kind of vulnerability rarely seen from a fighter in the immediate post-victory moment.

Holloway vs. Poirier 2 was the most competitive fight Holloway had had as a champion and the one that revealed the limits of his body at 155 lbs. Holloway returned to FW and successfully defended at UFC 240 against Frankie Edgar. Poirier went on to face Khabib for the undisputed LW title at UFC 242, where Khabib won by submission in the third round. UFC 236 belongs among the finest Atlanta cards and the finest double-title-fight events in UFC history. For the full 2019 arc see UFC 235.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why were there two interim titles at UFC 236?

Khabib was serving his nine-month NSAC suspension from the post-fight brawl at UFC 229, leaving the LW title vacant for competition. Robert Whittaker was still recovering from emergency surgery following the UFC 234 cancellation, leaving the MW title similarly inactive. Both interim title fights were booked for the same card.

Why was the Adesanya vs. Gastelum decision at UFC 236 acclaimed?

Unanimous decision: 48-46, 48-46, 48-46 for Adesanya, with all three judges scoring round five 10-8 for his three knockdowns in the frame. Gastelum knocked Adesanya down in the opening round and badly hurt him with a head kick in the fourth, but Adesanya answered with cleaner overall striking and a dominant fifth round. The fight is widely cited as one of the greatest middleweight title fights in UFC history.

How did Holloway vs. Poirier 2 end?

Unanimous decision for Poirier after five rounds (49-46 across all three judges). Poirier badly hurt Holloway with a straight left hand in the first round and built a cushion through the early rounds, though the famously durable Holloway never went down. Holloway pressed forward late but the deficit was too large to overturn. Poirier became the interim UFC Lightweight Champion and set up the title unification fight with Khabib.

What happened to the LW interim title Poirier won at UFC 236?

Poirier carried the interim LW title to UFC 242 (September 2019), where he fought Khabib Nurmagomedov for unification. Khabib submitted Poirier by rear-naked choke at 2:06 of round three to become undisputed LW champion. Holloway, meanwhile, returned to FW where he remained champion until losing to Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 245 in December 2019.

Who received the UFC 236 post-fight bonuses?

Fight of the Night was awarded to both five-round title fights — Poirier vs. Holloway and Adesanya vs. Gastelum — with all four fighters collecting $50,000. No Performance of the Night bonuses were handed out at UFC 236.
