The Start of the Zuffa Era
Zuffa LLC — formed by Station Casino owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta along with their friend Dana White — purchased the UFC from SEG in January 2001 for $2 million. SEG had been hemorrhaging money, cable had blocked the UFC, and the PPV market had collapsed. White, named UFC President, used his connections at the Nevada State Athletic Commission to begin securing sanctioning. UFC 30 was the first test.
The production was visibly improved. Fighter-selected entrance music replaced the standard UFC intro. Dana White appeared on camera and spoke about the future of the promotion. The event sold out. UFC 30 was the first hint that the sport under new management might find a way to survive.
Tito Ortiz Slams Evan Tanner Unconscious
The Light Heavyweight Championship main event lasted 30 seconds. Ortiz picked Tanner up in a bearhug, slammed him to the mat with enough force to knock him out on impact, and the referee stopped the fight. It was one of the most dramatic finishes in title fight history. Ortiz did not need to throw a single punch.

UFC 30 is the starting point of everything the UFC became. The $2 million purchase was widely mocked; the UFC was losing money, blocked from cable, and largely ignored by mainstream sports media. The Fertittas and Dana White believed the sport had a future. Over the next decade, they invested heavily, secured television deals, launched The Ultimate Fighter, and built the promotion into a global sports property sold for $4 billion in 2016.
None of that was visible at UFC 30. What was visible was a better-produced show, a president who could articulate a vision for the sport, and two title fights that delivered. It was enough of a foundation to build on.
