Introduction
UFC 46: Supernatural. January 31, 2004. Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada. Two championship fights were scheduled. Both produced upsets. Vitor Belfort won the Light Heavyweight Championship by opening a cut above Randy Couture’s eye in 49 seconds; the doctor stopped it before a minute had elapsed. Then B.J. Penn moved up from lightweight to welterweight and submitted Matt Hughes with a rear-naked choke in the first round. Two champions lost their titles in the same night. The card also featured the UFC debut of Georges St-Pierre, who defeated Karo Parisyan by unanimous decision.
It was the first major UFC card to feature Chuck Norris and Shaquille O’Neal in attendance. Lee Murray, a British middleweight, submitted Jorge Rivera via triangle armbar and then did not return to the UFC — he later became one of the most publicised armed robbers in British criminal history.

Belfort Stops Couture in 49 Seconds
Couture had defended the Light Heavyweight Championship against Tito Ortiz at UFC 44. Against Belfort, a left hook landed and opened a severe cut above Couture’s left eye. The ringside doctor examined the wound and stopped the fight at 0:49 of round one. Couture argued later that the cut was not as severe as the stoppage suggested. The result stood. Belfort became UFC Light Heavyweight Champion for the second time.
B.J. Penn Submits Matt Hughes
Penn had competed in the lightweight division throughout his UFC career. Moving up to welterweight — fifteen pounds heavier — to fight the most dominant welterweight in the sport was considered an act of overconfidence by most observers. Hughes was making the sixth defence of his title against a fighter who was not even a natural welterweight.
In 4:39 of the first round, Penn had Hughes’ back and the rear-naked choke applied. Hughes tapped. It was one of the most jarring upsets in the sport’s history to that point. Penn left the UFC shortly afterward in a contract dispute, and the welterweight title was vacated.

Records & Milestones
🏆 Both LHW and WW titles changed hands in the same night — an unprecedented double championship upset.
🌟 Georges St-Pierre’s UFC debut — the future multi-time UFC Welterweight Champion won his first UFC fight by unanimous decision over Karo Parisyan; the bout was named Fight of the Night.
🏆 B.J. Penn moves up two weight classes and submits Hughes — one of the most discussed upsets in early UFC history; Penn left the promotion shortly after and the WW title was vacated.
Legacy & Impact
UFC 46 is remembered as a chaotic evening in the best possible sense. Two champions lost in a single night. The new light heavyweight champion was not considered the sport’s strongest fighter in the division. The welterweight champion had moved up from a lower weight class to earn the belt. Penn’s subsequent departure left the welterweight landscape unsettled for months.
GSP’s debut against Parisyan began a UFC career that would produce one of the most dominant championship reigns in the sport’s history. At UFC 46 he was just a 22-year-old from Montreal who won a decision and won Fight of the Night.
FAQ
How did Vitor Belfort win the LHW title so quickly at UFC 46?

Did B.J. Penn really move up from lightweight to welterweight to fight Hughes?
