UFC 53: Heavy Hitters | Event Profile, Full Results & Legacy

Introduction

UFC 53: Heavy Hitters. June 4, 2005. Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey. Sold-out crowd. Rich Franklin defeated Evan Tanner by TKO in round four to win the UFC Middleweight Championship — his path from Cincinnati schoolteacher to champion complete. Andrei Arlovski retained the Interim Heavyweight Championship by knocking out Justin Eilers in round one. Forrest Griffin, seven weeks after the TUF 1 Finale, made his official UFC debut and submitted Bill Mahood at 2:18.

The sold-out Boardwalk Hall was one of the first commercial signs outside Las Vegas that the post-TUF audience expansion was real. The card also featured Karo Parisyan defeating Matt Serra, Nick Diaz, Nate Quarry, David Loiseau, and Paul Buentello.

Legacy & Impact

UFC 53 is a transitional card in the best sense: the first sold-out Atlantic City event of the post-TUF era, confirming that the audience expansion from Griffin/Bonnar was national rather than local. Rich Franklin’s Middleweight Championship reign lasted sixteen months before Anderson Silva ended it at UFC 64. Arlovski’s interim reign continued until Frank Mir’s return. The sport was growing at an unprecedented rate and this card was a clean, well-executed event in the middle of that growth.
