UFC 67: All or Nothing | Event Profile, Full Results & Legacy

Introduction

UFC 67: All or Nothing. February 3, 2007. Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada. The first UFC pay-per-view broadcast in High Definition. The card was originally scheduled to feature two championship fights — Anderson Silva defending the Middleweight title against Travis Lutter, and Georges St-Pierre defending the Welterweight title against Matt Serra — but both fell through. Lutter came in 1.4 lbs over the middleweight limit; the bout proceeded as a non-title contest. GSP withdrew with a knee injury.

The card made history for a different reason: Mirko Cro Cop, Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida, and Frankie Edgar all made their UFC debuts on the same night. Three of those four went on to become UFC champions. Silva submitted Lutter in round two. Cro Cop stopped Eddie Sanchez by TKO in round one. Jackson KO'd Marvin Eastman in round two. Machida defeated Sam Hoger. Edgar defeated Tyson Griffin.

Context: No title fights — first UFC PPV without championship bouts since UFC 60

The Build-Up

The card was constructed around two title fights that both fell apart. Anderson Silva was supposed to defend the Middleweight Championship against Travis Lutter, who had won the TUF 4 MW tournament to earn the shot. Lutter weighed in at 186.4 lbs — over the 185-pound contracted limit. The title fight became a non-title bout. Dana White was furious.

GSP was supposed to defend the Welterweight Championship against Matt Serra, fulfilling the TUF 4 WW winner's title shot. GSP withdrew with a knee injury, postponing the fight. The card was left without any championship bouts — the first UFC PPV in that position since UFC 60 in May 2006.

What the card did deliver was an extraordinary concentration of debut talent. Mirko Cro Cop, the PRIDE Open-Weight Grand Prix Champion, was making his long-awaited US debut. Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida, and Frankie Edgar were all debuting. The historical significance of that single card's debut roster only became apparent over the following years.

Main Event

Anderson Silva vs. Travis Lutter — Middleweight (Non-Title)

Anderson Silva controlled Lutter from the opening exchanges. In round two, he locked in a triangle choke and added elbow strikes to the head until Lutter was forced to tap at 2:11. The finish was dominant and comprehensive, making the non-title tag irrelevant as a statement of Silva's position in the division.

Despite the controversy over the weight miss, Anderson Silva's performance was the clearest demonstration yet of his elite technical level. He would make 10 consecutive successful Middleweight title defences after winning the belt at UFC 64.

Co-Main Event

Mirko Cro Cop vs. Eddie Sanchez — Heavyweight (Cro Cop UFC Debut)

Mirko Cro Cop, the 2006 PRIDE Open-Weight Grand Prix Champion and one of the most feared strikers in heavyweight history, made his US and UFC debut against Eddie Sanchez — an undefeated 8-0 heavyweight prospect. Cro Cop landed strikes and stopped Sanchez by TKO at 4:33 of round one. The debut passed its test. The expectations for Cro Cop's UFC run were enormous.

Records & Milestones

First UFC PPV broadcast in High Definition — a milestone in the sport’s presentation upgrade.

First UFC PPV without title fights since UFC 60 (May 2006) — both scheduled title fights fell through: Lutter missed weight; GSP withdrew with knee injury.

Four major debuts on one card: Mirko Cro Cop, Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Frankie Edgar — three future UFC champions among them.

Travis Lutter's weight miss: the TUF 4 MW winner came in over the contracted 185-pound limit; his title shot turned into a non-title bout.

Legacy & Impact

UFC 67 is remembered for what happened around the main event, not necessarily the main event itself. The debut card was one of the most talent-dense single nights in UFC history. Quinton Jackson became LHW champion at UFC 71 three months later. Frankie Edgar became LW champion at UFC 112 in 2010. Lyoto Machida became LHW champion at UFC 98 in 2009. The 2007 PRIDE integration of talent produced immediate commercial and competitive results.

Lutter’s weight miss and GSP’s withdrawal made the card commercially underwhelming at the time. In retrospect, the debut roster makes it one of the most historically significant undercard events in UFC history.
