The Build-Up

Gabriel Gonzaga had become the HW number one contender with his stunning left high kick KO of Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 70. Younger, heavier, and coming off the sport’s most viral finish, Gonzaga was the clearest threat Randy Couture had faced since winning the title from Tim Sylvia at UFC 68. Couture was 44 years old.

Georges St-Pierre's return from the Serra loss was the co-main narrative. Four months earlier he had been stopped in round one as a 7-to-1 favourite. UFC 74 was his reset — Josh Koscheck was a top WW contender and a serious test.

Main Event

Randy Couture (c) vs. Gabriel Gonzaga — UFC Heavyweight Championship

Randy Couture stunned Gonzaga with a left hook in the opening seconds and controlled the early exchanges. A slam in round one caused a head clash that broke or damaged Gonzaga’s nose — a wound that bled throughout. Couture used his wrestling to keep Gonzaga on the fence, denied his jiu-jitsu, and wore him down with short punches. The fight was stopped at 1:37 of round three.

Randy Couture retained the Heavyweight Championship at 44 in a performance that confirmed the legitimacy of his comeback title run. His reign ended at UFC 91 in November 2008 when Brock Lesnar stopped him in round two.

Co-Main Event

Georges St-Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck — Welterweight

Georges St-Pierre dominated Koscheck for three rounds with sharp striking, effective takedowns, and active submission attempts. Joe Rogan described round two as “humiliating” for Koscheck, who barely survived a kimura attempt. GSP won 29-28, 29-28, 30-27.

The performance set Georges St-Pierre up as the undisputed number one WW contender and made the Matt Serra rematch a commercial certainty. They fought at UFC 83 in Montreal in April 2008.

Georges St-Pierre returns to form — dominant UD over Koscheck; four months after the Matt Serra upset loss.

Renato Sobral fired — refused to release choke on David Heath after referee stoppage; Heath went limp; UFC terminated Sobral’s contract; NSAC withheld $25,000 of his purse.

Frank Mir submission win — Mir continued his comeback from the 2004 motorcycle accident that had nearly ended his career.

Legacy & Impact

Randy Couture at UFC 74 is one of the most compelling sequences in MMA history: a 44-year-old coming out of retirement, winning the HW title from a 12-month retirement, and then making his first successful defence against the man who had just delivered one of the sport’s most iconic finishes. The Sobral incident was the card’s most controversial moment. It was one of the earliest high-profile cases of unsportsmanlike post-fight conduct in the sport’s modern era.

Georges St-Pierre's return to dominance at UFC 74 set up the Serra rematch at UFC 83 in Montreal in April 2008 — 21,390 fans at the Bell Centre; GSP stopped Serra in round two to regain the Welterweight Championship in front of his hometown crowd.
