The Build-Up

Sean Sherk’s return was the card’s defining context. He had been stripped of the LW title after testing positive for nandrolone following UFC 73. His suspension was reduced to six months on appeal. BJ Penn won the vacant title at UFC 80, and Sherk was his mandatory first defence. The ill will was real — Sherk was publicly outspoken about his innocence; Penn was publicly dismissive of Sherk’s credibility.

Main Event

BJ Penn (c) vs. Sean Sherk — UFC Lightweight Championship

BJ Penn controlled the fight with his jiu-jitsu and striking precision. Sherk pushed forward but could not solve Penn’s angles. By round three, the damage around Sherk’s eyes had accumulated enough that Herb Dean stopped the fight at the round’s end when Sherk could not continue.

BJ Penn had now made his first successful LW title defence and was firmly established as the best lightweight in the world.

Co-Main Event

Wanderlei Silva vs. Keith Jardine — Light Heavyweight

Wanderlei Silva had lost multiple fights in a row and desperately needed a result. He got it in 36 seconds: a flurry of punches that dropped and stopped Jardine at 0:36 of round one. The crowd erupted. The KO earned Silva the Knockout of the Night bonus ($75,000).

Legacy & Impact

Wanderlei Silva’s 36-second KO of Jardine is one of his most celebrated finishes. After a difficult run of form, the emotional nature of the result and the crowd’s reaction gave the moment real weight.
