MMA & UFC Daily: Whittaker’s Heavy Ambition, White House Denials, and the Mexico City Shadow

Good morning, fight fans. It is Wednesday, February 25, 2026. The MMA world is currently split between looking back at a dominant middleweight statement in Houston and staring down a high-altitude, high-stakes homecoming in Mexico City this weekend.

From a legend making a massive divisional jump to Dana White setting the record straight on the most expensive event in history, here is your daily briefing.

"Bobby Knuckles" Goes Big: Whittaker Moving to 205

In a move that has stunned the ANZAC MMA community, former middleweight king Robert Whittaker has officially confirmed he is moving up to the light heavyweight division.

Whittaker, who began his UFC career as a welterweight, cited the cumulative toll of weight cutting as the primary driver for the change.

"Shut up, dude," Whittaker said to critics on Submission Radio. "I'm on the tail end of my career, I've got to try rather than just thinking about 'what ifs.' I walk around at 107-108kg anyway. I want to train fully fueled and come into fight week feeling good for once."

Whittaker is targeting a June debut at 205 pounds. The move is a gamble; while "Bobby Knuckles" possesses elite speed, he will be giving up significant height and reach to the giants of the light heavyweight division. However, his technical striking and legendary takedown defense could provide a fascinating new puzzle for the Top 10 at 205.

Dana White Shuts Down "White House" Rumors

The rumors regarding a date change for the historic UFC White House event on the South Lawn have been met with a characteristically blunt response from the UFC CEO. Reports had suggested the event was being moved from June 14 (President Trump’s birthday) to June 26.

White took to Instagram to incinerate the speculation:

"Media is so full of s**t. White House fight. Date is the same, Sunday, June 14."

White also doubled down on the sheer scale of the event, claiming that the $20 million spent on Noche UFC at the Sphere was "ashtray money" compared to the logistics of building a world-class arena on the White House lawn. With four to five title fights rumored for the card, it is shaping up to be the most exclusive and expensive night in combat sports history.

UFC Mexico City: Security Concerns and Altitude Wars

As the promotion descends on Arena CDMX for this Saturday’s card, the conversation has shifted from the cage to the streets. Rumors of a venue change due to a spike in local security concerns have circulated on social media.

However, as of this morning, the UFC has confirmed the event is proceeding in Mexico City. The card is headlined by the first Mexican-born champion, Brandon Moreno, facing the English phenom Lone'er Kavanagh.

Kavanagh, who stepped in on just two weeks' notice, faces two enemies on Saturday: the former champion and the 7,300-foot altitude. Mexico City’s thin air has notoriously claimed the gas tanks of many elite fighters (including Cain Velasquez in the past). For Kavanagh, a win here would be one of the greatest "short-notice" upsets in flyweight history.

The Strickland Fallout: Rankings Update

Following his TKO victory over Anthony Hernandez, Sean Strickland has officially solidified his #4 spot in the middleweight rankings, while Hernandez has dropped two spots to #6.

The focus now turns to Khamzat Chimaev. With Strickland calling for a title shot and Nassourdine Imavov also lurking, the middleweight title picture is a powder keg. Strickland predicts that even if Chimaev fights Imavov after Ramadan, the champion will likely suffer another injury, potentially keeping the belt on ice until late 2026.
