Introduction
UFC 195: Lawler vs. Condit. January 2, 2016. MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas. Robbie Lawler retained the UFC Welterweight Championship against Carlos Condit by split decision (48-47, 48-47, 47-48) in five brutal rounds. Both fighters had knockdowns. Condit outlanded Lawler 198-78 in total strikes — and lost on the scorecards.
The fight was originally planned as the co-main event of UFC 193, with Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm as the co-main. After Lawler’s thumb injury delayed the WW title fight, Rousey-Holm was elevated to Melbourne, and Lawler–Condit became the headliner of UFC 195.
In the co-main event, Stipe Miocic stopped Andrei Arlovski with a TKO in 54 seconds, earning a shot at Fabricio Werdum’s HW title. Tyron Woodley was announced as the next WW title contender. Dustin Poirier defeated Joe Duffy by UD on the prelims.

The Build-Up
Lawler had won the WW title at UFC 181 and defended it against Rory MacDonald at UFC 189 in July 2015 in one of the greatest UFC fights ever made. The thumb injury he sustained in that fight required surgery and pushed his defence to January. Condit had been the interim WW champion in 2011-12, held wins over Nick Diaz, Rory MacDonald, and Martin Kampmann, and had been out since May 2015. He entered as the longer, more technical striker capable of keeping Lawler at range.
The fight was billed as a natural styles clash: Lawler’s power and pressure against Condit’s volume, movement, and leg kicks. Among the sport’s top analysts, many predicted Condit would outpoint Lawler on the scorecards. Two of three judges agreed with Lawler instead.
Main Event
Robbie Lawler (c) vs. Carlos Condit — UFC WW Championship
Round one: Condit established range with kicks, circled away from Lawler’s power hand, and dropped Lawler with a left shovel hook ninety seconds in. Lawler smiled and rose. Round two: Lawler dropped Condit with a right hook but couldn’t finish. Rounds three and four were Condit’s by volume; he outlanded Lawler significantly in strikes throughout.
Round five: both came out with everything remaining. Lawler rocked Condit with a left hand; Condit fell violently backward into the cage, bleeding from the mouth. He never went down. They traded exhausted punches at close range until the final bell. Two judges gave the fight to Lawler 48-47; one to Condit 48-47. Condit post-fight: ‘I felt I had three rounds in the bag, but that’s why you don’t leave it to the judges.’
Co-Main Event
Stipe Miocic vs. Andrei Arlovski — Heavyweight
Miocic landed a right hand behind Arlovski’s ear in the opening exchange. Arlovski was rocked. Miocic threw a combination; another right-left sent Arlovski to the canvas. Herb Dean pulled Miocic off at 0:54. Stipe Miocic had earned the UFC HW title shot against Werdum.

Records & Milestones
Robbie Lawler — second WW title defence; retained despite being outlanded 198-78 in total strikes. The WW division had now produced four consecutive fifth-round title fights, two of which went to split decisions.
Stipe Miocic — 54-second TKO of Arlovski earned the HW title shot against Fabricio Werdum. Miocic stopped Werdum at UFC 198 in May 2016 to become the UFC HW Champion.
Tyron Woodley — announced as next WW title contender after UFC 195; challenged Lawler at UFC 201 in July 2016, stopping him by TKO in round one to become the new WW champion.
Brian Ortega — debut win at UFC 195 via submission; Ortega became a top UFC FW contender and title challenger by 2018.
Legacy & Impact
Lawler vs. Condit is one of the most debated decisions in recent WW title history. Condit landed nearly three times as many total strikes. Lawler landed the bigger shots in the decisive rounds. The standard argument is that round five — where Lawler clearly won after nearly dropping Condit — was the round the scorecards followed. Condit felt he’d won three.
The co-main event’s story was long-term: Stipe Miocic’s 54-second TKO of Arlovski was the beginning of one of the longest HW title reigns in UFC history. He would go on to make three consecutive title defences (a HW record), lose the title to Francis Ngannou, reclaim it, and finish with a career that placed him as the most decorated UFC HW of all time.
FAQ
Was the Lawler vs. Condit result at UFC 195 controversial?
Yes. Carlos Condit outlanded Robbie Lawler 198-78 in total strikes across five rounds, including winning rounds one, three and four on most analyses. Two judges scored it 48-47 for Lawler; one scored 47-48 for Condit. Lawler’s powerful round five — where he nearly stopped Condit — was decisive on the scorecards.
What did Stipe Miocic achieve at UFC 195?
Miocic stopped former UFC HW Champion Andrei Arlovski in 54 seconds with a TKO, earning the HW title shot against champion Fabricio Werdum. He stopped Werdum at UFC 198 in May 2016 to become UFC HW Champion and went on to set the record for most consecutive HW title defences.
Was UFC 195 originally going to be headlined by Rousey vs. Holm?
Yes. The original plan had Ronda Rousey defending the WBW title against Holly Holm at UFC 195. Lawler’s thumb injury delayed his title fight against Condit, which prompted the UFC to move Rousey-Holm to headline UFC 193 in Melbourne (where Holm won). Lawler-Condit then headlined UFC 195.
Who was announced as the next WW title challenger after UFC 195?
Tyron Woodley was announced as the next WW title contender after UFC 195. He challenged Lawler at UFC 201 on July 30, 2016, stopping him by TKO in round one to win the WW title.
Who made their UFC debut at UFC 195?
Brian Ortega made his UFC debut at UFC 195, winning by submission. Ortega became a top UFC FW contender by 2018, challenging Max Holloway for the title at UFC 231 in December 2018 (losing by unanimous decision).
